Fiberglass was introduced to the fishing community in 1940's. Over the years various manufacturing techniques were developed including the one used with all modern graphite rods. Dr. Glenn G. Havens invented the process of tightly wrapping a resin-saturated fiberglass cloth around a removable steel mandrel and then baking the blank in a high temperature oven. This process is the basis for the manufacture of all fiberglass and graphite rods over the past fifty years. Fiberglass rods were improved once again with the use of S-glass whose modulus of elasticity is considerably higher than the previously used E-glass.
