Patriarch of the Orvis fishing empire. C.F. Orvis opened
a tackle shop in 1856 in Manchester Vermont. C.F.
Orvis was one of the first to operate a fly fishing
tackle production business. C.F. Orvis offered some
434+ fly patterns to the public. In 1890 Orvis superfine
flies were selling for $1.50 per dozen. The business
he founded still continues today in his name.
